I started this blog post as I was entering the 36th week of my third pregnancy. As I was writing this I got a little self-conscious and thought that no one would want to hear about the postpartum essentials I use. Then a few weeks ago I received a message from a friend. She was about to have her first baby and wanted to know what to stock up on! I decided to finish this post for all the first-time moms who can’t converse at a baby shower (thanks COVID) and need to know what has helped me get through postpartum.
So here’s my list of all the essentials to help with postpartum! (These are in no particular order!)
1. Tucks
You know how I JUST said that these are in no particular order. Well, it’s kind of true, with the exception of Tucks. If you buy anything before you deliver your baby please buy these! Tucks are medicated cooling pads that have witch hazel in them. They help with hemorrhoids and soothe all the irritation, burning, and itching that your vagina will feel after labor. I always make sure we have an extra tub at home (along with the one the hospital will give you). This is number one on my list for a reason; because it really helps!
2. Maxi Pads
Who else remembers the good old days of when you used maxi pads before tampons? I’m sorry did I say “good old days”? I meant the obnoxiously annoying days that were made simple once you switched to tampons. Well, now it’s time to go back to the pads! I usually get the overnight ones with the extra protection because you’re going to bleed… A LOT! Especially if you’re fair-skinned like me. Make sure to stock up on these before you go into labor so you’re not running to the store after giving birth to grab them.
Here’s the ones that I get:
3. Peri Bottle
This is not something you need to buy before going into labor. Most hospitals will give you one to take home. I don’t know about any other women but using the peri bottle with warm water on my nether regions postpartum just instantly soothes me! You want the water warm but not hot.
4. Stool Softeners
I’m going to be very honest with you when I tell you this; the first bowel movement after labor is not for the faint of heart. I like to refer to it as the “second baby” because that’s what it feels like. Some of the ways to make your first bowel movement go smoother are by drinking lots of water, adding fiber to your diet, and taking stool softeners.
5. Full-Back Underwear
I know what you’re thinking, “Full-back underwear? Yea ok” But trust me on this one. Yes, the hospital will give you mesh underwear and you’ll love those more than anything else but then you get home. You’re still bleeding for a while and you will be wearing a pad. So, please do yourself a favor and grab a basic pair of full-back underwear. Bonus tip: Make sure you buy a size up so that you are comfortable!
Postpartum Essentials
Postpartum is intense! I remember when I was pregnant with JT and I thought it would all be back to normal once he was out. BOY was I wrong! Remember to give yourself grace during this time period. The main thing to focus on is your health (including mental health) and your baby’s health. Everything on this list should help you with your transition from pregnancy to motherhood.
Now it’s your turn! For the moms out there reading this, what should be added to this list? Was there anything that really helped you with your postpartum experience? I love and appreciate any feedback you have!

I agree with all of these!
In addition, soft toilet paper is a MUST. I also had our diaper pail moved to the bathroom because everyone wanted to come see the baby, but nobody needed to see what was in the bathroom garbage!
I was glad to have disposable nursing pads (if you plan to breastfeed) and MILK CATCHER CUPS! The provided amazing relief as my body adjusted to breastfeeding.
Kelly, you really hit all the important ones!
Yes! Soft toilet paper is a must for sure! I’ve never tried the milk catcher cups. I’ll have to check them out.
Yes!!! Stool softeners. Never thought those would be so important. But that first bowel movement….aw man feels like giving birth again!
Yes! The first bowel movement is no joke and feels like delivering a second baby.
Your honest discussion about stool softeners tackles an often unspoken aspect of postpartum recovery, offering practical tips for a smoother transition. I’ll pass your article on to my friend who is newly pregnant!
