An Academic Affair by Jodi McAlister is a very intelligent and cute love story that had me in a chokehold from the first chapter.
An Academic Affair is a fun and tension-filled romance about two academics who can’t stop arguing with each other, and who try to get the same job at a college. One of them gets the job, but they find a loophole where if they get married, they can both get a job at that college. Can they put aside their arguing and work together for the sake of their jobs? Is the line between love and hate really that thin? Read this book and you’ll find out!

Synopsis From Amazon
Sadie Shaw and Jonah Fisher have been academic rivals since they first crossed paths as undergraduates in the literature department thirteen years ago. Now that a highly coveted teaching opportunity has come up, their rivalry hits epic proportions. Jonah needs the job to move closer to his recently divorced sister and her children, while Sadie needs the financial security and freedom of a full-time teaching position.
When Sadie notices that the job offers partner hire, however, she hatches a plot to get them both the job. All they must do is get legally married. It’s a simple win-win solution but when sparks begin to fly, it becomes clear that despite their education, these two may not have thought this whole thing through.

My Review of An Academic Affair
First off, I want to thank Jodi McAlister, NetGalley, and Atria Books for an advanced reading copy of An Academic Affair. I loved reading Sadie and Jonah’s love story. It’s such a great book!
If I could describe that book in one sentence, it would be: an intelligent, enjoyable love story about two academics who love to argue with each other, who end up marrying for jobs and realize the line between love and hate is very thin.
An Academic Affair is such a great story if you’re a fan of banter. The way that Jodi writes the main characters’ dialogue is a work of art. The tension is off the charts.
One of my favorite aspects of this book that sets it apart from other romance novels is the inclusion of footnotes. I loved reading them because they added another layer to the story. Most of the time they made me laugh out loud.
Another thing I really loved was Jonah Fisher. What a man! He is smart and kind. He wants to be there for his sister. The way he cares about Sadie and tries to comfort her when she’s struggling. The main way I can describe Jonah is a cinnamon roll inside a cardigan. He gives cozy vibes. Plus, he just wants to worship Sadie without getting his heart broken.
Some tropes in this book are: rivals to lovers, marriage of convenience, forced proximity, slow burn, a little bit of spice, and he falls first.
This book is perfect if you like books with academic vibes, a quick and enjoyable read, spice, but for the sake of the plot, and an amazing MMC (main male character). Overall, this book was a great read. I’m really glad I read it.
