Summer is almost over and we are slowly getting into the fall spirit. One thing we struggle with as a family is staying active in the fall. We are a pretty active family and like spending time outside (well, not me but my children do). So here are the six fall outdoor activities to keep your kids active this fall. We have enjoyed 5 of these six activities before and they are filled with fun, memories, and movement. I hope you and your family try these activities and enjoy them!
1. Go To An Orchard or A Pumpkin Patch.
This is one of my family’s favorite outdoor activities in the fall. We make it a point to go to the local orchard one weekend in the fall. It is a perfect place because the kids can run around and play. I usually get a delicious coffee or apple cider, then as we leave, we grab some pumpkins and an amazing apple pie.
You can find any orchard or pumpkin patch and let your children play. Most of the time they have a play area for kids of all ages. It might cost some money but if you go during the week it might be cheaper.
2. Play Football in the Backyard or Local Park
This is one of the simplest fall outdoor activities because all you need is open space and a football. My family is OBSESSED with sports and playing football is a great way to get children active and make some great memories. You can even take it a step further and set up some uprights and spray paint some yards in your grass. We usually do this around JT’s birthday because he loves it! We typically set up a little game for JT, his friends, and some aunts and uncles. Just remember to keep it to touch football for the younger kids.
3. Rake the Yard Together and Jump in the Leaves.
Raking up the leaves in the yard and jumping in them is such an underrated activity. You get the joy of jumping in the leaves and having fun with the cleaning task of having the leaves raked. Also, My children thrive doing tasks around the house if there is a “reward” at the end. Jumping in the leaves is a fun reward for helping us rake up all the leaves in our yard.

4. Go on a Hike at some Local Trails.
We are pretty fortunate and live next to some small trails for hiking up old mines. We usually do this once in a while and the kids enjoy it. About once in the fall we go to Starved Rock and hike a long trail. The older kids like it because there’s usually a lot of cool sightseeing. Depending on where you live and what level your child is at, you can find small trails and longer trails using All Trails. It is the perfect resource for finding family-friendly hiking trails: https://www.alltrails.com/us
5. Go to the Zoo
Going to the zoo isn’t just a fall activity but we love going in the fall. It is not as hot in the summer and it’s usually less crowded. We love going in the fall and walking around to see all the animals. Before we go in, we all pick out one animal at the zoo we want to see and then try to see everyone’s favorite. I love going to the zoo with our kids because we read the signs by the animals and hopefully our kids learn a little bit more about the animals we see. This is a great way to keep kids active during the fall season, especially if you go to a big local zoo!
6. Make a Fall Scavenger Hunt
Making a fall scavenger hunt is a fall activity we have not yet done. I’m excited to add this to our fun fall outdoor activities list this year. What you do is make a list of things you see outside in the fall. This can be leaves, pumpkins, flowers, birds, squirrels, spider webs, and other fall things. After you make the list you go outside with your children and explore, trying to find all the things on the scavenger hunt list. You can make it a competition for older children or you can find the things as a family. Either way, you will be outside, active, and making memories.
Final Thoughts
All of these fall outdoor activities to keep your kids active are pretty simple and easy to do. I hope you and your family enjoy doing these activities as much as mine does. We are so lucky to be blessed with families and one way of showing that appreciation is to give them attention and love. One day our kids are going to look back at their childhoods and hopefully, they remember some of these outdoor activities fondly.

Hiking is one of my favorite fall family activities! Great list.
I absolutely love the fall, and these are fantastic activities to enjoy during the season! Going to an orchard or pumpkin patch is such a perfect way to spend a crisp fall day, especially with a warm coffee or cider in hand.
YES! The warm coffee/cider is a need for any fall outdoor activities!
As simple as it might sound, raking the leaves and playing in them was one of my all time favorite family activities as a kid. It’s something that I continue to do to this day, and I don’t have kids yet haha.
It’s my favorite too! Jumping in leaves never gets old and everyone should do it!
I love fall activities. Today we walked around a cranberry bog — puts me in the mood for autumn.
That sounds lovely! I can’t wait for autumn
Hiking and scavenger hunts are my two favorites. Collecting nuts that drop from the trees as well. I simply love autumn.
That’s awesome! I didn’t even think of collecting nuts that fall.
This is such a great list! I don’t have kids, but I am going use these ideas to keep my boyfriend and me active this fall so we don’t rot on the couch watching football lol
Yes! These are perfect for weekends for adults. I hope you enjoy the fall season!
My niece and nephew love going to the zoo. If we got leaves to rake, I’m sure my nephew would enjoy jumping in them.
The zoo is a favorite of my kids too. I hope you have a great fall
Is there an age to stop jumping in the leaves, because I really want to do it again this fall, even though I don’t have kids. Thanks for the great list! Will share it with my family!
There is no age limit to jumping in the leaves! I hope you have fun!
