This is our fool-proof chore chart system that has encouraged our children to want to help out around the house.

Almost a year ago, I decided that I was going to create a chore chart system for my family because I was sick of doing all the cleaning and work. So I found this awesome magnetic chart online that is perfect for four kids. I started using it and created the best chore system that has been foolproof. It has motivated my children to do the work to earn rewards. I hope this system works for your family, too.

How Our Chore Chart System Works

The way our chore chart system works is that each child has a section with their chores written on it. When they complete a chore, they check it off. There’s also a “Free for all” section that is free for anyone to do.

Each chore has a symbol next to it, which indicates the number of points it will earn for completing that chore. On my chart, if it’s a chore that I expect them to do every day, then it has a star next to it, meaning you get one point for accomplishing it. For example, making their bed and brushing their teeth gets them one point. If it’s a chore that takes a little bit more effort, then it has a smiley face, and that means they can get 2 points for doing it. Lastly, there’s an exclamation point for chores that take the most time, and they receive five points. The five points tend to be their Sunday chore that we do every Sunday.

At the end of the day, I add up their points and add them to their total. They can use their points to earn certain rewards. Sometimes they have a toy they want to and they can use their points to buy it. (See below to read more about rewards)

Ideas for Your Family’s Chore Chart (By Age)

I have about 5 chore ideas for each age group

For Toddlers: get dressed, clean up toys before bed, make bed, put clothes in hamper, put dishes in the sink.

For Preschoolers: clear the table, set the table, get themselves dressed, clean their room without assistance, and feed pets. (plus all chores for previous age).

For Early Elementary Kids: Vacuum rooms, sweep kitchen floor, empty trash cans, sort socks, and unload dishwasher. (plus all chores for previous ages).

For Older Elementary Kids: Clean bathrooms, make a simple meal, help with laundry, wash the dishes, and mop floors. (plus all chores for previous ages).

For Middle Schoolers: Clean the shower/tub, make a full dinner, mow the lawn, walk the dog, and clean out the garage. (plus all chores for previous ages).

Reward Ideas

Here are certain rewards that my kids can buy with their points:

  • Soda
  • Candy at the store
  • Prime drinks
  • 30 minutes of TV control
  • Ice cream
  • Slushie/Smoothie
  • Candy at home
  • Go somewhere (park, movie theatre, or zoo)
  • Have a friend over
  • Toys

The way we use the points to buy toys is by looking up the toy online, and whatever the price is we multiply it by 3, and whatever the total is, that’s how many points it’ll take to buy it.

Final Thoughts

We have been using this chore chart system for the last 8 months, and it has been a game changer! It has motivated our kids to do their basic chores without much pushback. Also, I love it when my kids ask for something and I can respond, “Do you have enough points for it?” Then they do things off their list to earn more points.

If you have any questions about this system or if you have chore ideas for certain ages, let me know in the comments below. If you have a chore system that works for your family, let me know that, too! I love hearing from all of you and hearing new ideas.

Lastly, if you think this chore chart system is pretty great, please don’t hesitate to share on social media. I appreciate all the love and support.

Thanks for reading,

Kel
